David's teaching career began in 1988 when he served as visiting professor for The University of Missouri, Kansas City. He then moved to Dallas to rebuild the Graduate Stage Design Program as Head of Stage Design at Southern Methodist University. David left SMU in 1998 to serve as Head of Stage Design at California State University Long Beach, where he served in this position for the following twenty-one years. David recdently retired from this position and is presently teaching as Professor Emeritus. However, his prolific professional design career continues.

In 2017, David, along with fellow lighting educators Steve Woods (SMU) and Stan Kaye (University of Florida) created the popular weekly podcast "LIGHT TALK with The Lumen Brothers". This podcast is presented as an educational service for their professional design colleagues, as well as for students learning and faculty teaching lighting design throughout the world. LIGHT TALK has been invited to present their show live for three consecutive years at the Live Design International Conference in Las Vegas, and performed the show at the 2018 ETC Cue Workshop interviewing CEO Fred Foster. LIGHT TALK with The Lumen Brothers is in its 3rd season, with over 120 episodes, interviewed over 30 lighting artists and industry experts, has over 110,000 downloads, and has listeners in over 115 counties.
